361 intersections formed by 19 horizontal and 19 vertical lines form the board; each player usually has 180 pieces; in theory the number is unlimited. Players alternate their turns; the active player puts one of his pieces on an intersection or passes his turn. Intersections are only adjacent orthogonally, never diagonally. Two or more adjacent pieces of the same color form a chain. Free adjacent intersections next to a piece or a chain are called their liberties. If a piece or a chain has no liberties they are captured and removed, and count one point per piece. at the end of the game. The are many rules variants and also different sizes of boards.
