PLAYED FOR YOU

La Nuit du Grand Poulpe

Cultists, Monsters and a Ritual

Once upon a time the Grand Octopus reigned the world, but then he was imprisoned on the bottom of the ocean. We are one of the Elect of his cult and are meant to awake him with a ritual. For this ritual you need four magic ingredients, all to be found in a university for young witches and wizards.

The map of the university is laid out, plus one external location of your choice, and each player takes the components for his cult. All cultists start in the library, other components are placed according to the rules.

All players play simultaneously, turn after turn, comprising several phases each. First you choose your location for cultist and monster by pointing the clock hands; then your clocks are reveals and you move both cultist and monster accordingly. Then conflicts are resolved: When only one cult is at a location and takes one ingredient. When only monsters are present, nothing happens. When several cultists and monsters are present, each cultist loses a power point. If you are down to zero you are out of the game. When several cultists are present without monsters, they need to negotiate if one of them gets an ingredient or none of them. If there is no decision is reached all cultists present lose one power point. IF one cult has collected four ingredients and has at least one power point left, it wins instantly. Otherwise, monsters are removed from the boards, cultists stay, and a new turn begins.

I am tempted to say Cthulhu for families – Octopus cultists and their monsters seem very civilized and you can enjoy the collecting of ingredients. The tactical element comes in the selection of locations and in negotiation.
