Bug Race

Legs may not overtake!

An apple marks the middle of the cross-shaped board made up from four race tracks. Beetles race to reach the apple first, but must take care not to stumble and to keep their legs in order. Beetle bodies are moving along the middle of the track, legs use the niches on both sides of the tracks.

Each player chooses a beetle, takes the corresponding legs and places his beetle or bug for the starting position. The most important rule for beetle movement is: A beetle can never lose or leave behind one of his legs, they must always be orthogonally or diagonally adjacent to the beetle body. A turn in the game comprises two phases: All draw two cards and hand one on to their left neighbor. Then you play both cards in turn in order to move the beetle. First you move the legs into free niches, then the body, and you need not make use of all leg movements that the card allows. You are also allowed to move the body in-between leg movements. If you are first to have your beetle completely across the finish line - not all legs need to have crossed, the whole body is enough to win. For experienced players the rules suggest to draw four cards, hand on three, choose another one from the three received, hand it on and so on, and then play four cards in the second phase of the turn.

Bug Race is a nice movement game with simple rules for a fun family game; it is fun to keep the legs together and the advances rules introduce some tactics. By the way, the game offers not only the idyllic “beetles race for the apple” version; the back side of board and beetles features robot beetles racing through a space station.
