PLAYED FOR YOU

Jenseits von Theben

Die Grabräuber

As an archeologist you search for the necessary knowledge to mount expeditions to Egypt, Mesopotamia, Crete and Greece. Professor cards are laid out, the remaining cards are stacked face-down and cards are drawn according to specifications to fill positions on the board. The active player is always the player who is in last position on the time track, possibly several times in a row, and has three possibilities for his turn: 1) Take a card - an action card you take up, other types are laid out. 2) Play a card - action cards are implemented and you mark time that is used for this. 3) Excavate - you need the suitable digging card and at least one point of regional Expertise. Expertise and general knowledge are both acquired via Book cards and Assistant action cards. You cannot use more general knowledge points than Expertise points for an excavation. You set the duration of the excavation between 1 and 12 weeks and draw cards from the Excavation pile of the region. You keep artifacts and return all worthless findings to the pile. When all cards from the draw pile have been used you score artifacts, exhibitions, professors, museums and congresses as well as distance between you and the player in first position on the time track, if applicable.

The fascinating element in this game, too, is time as non-renewable resource. Of course, there is a certain element of luck in drawing the cards, and timing is important, too, because if can, for instance, use artifacts from three regions for an exhibition instead of one region, the expedition costs you only three weeks instead of nine. A felicitous adaptation of the board game!
