Fungi

mushrooms with butter are more enjoyable

At dawn we enter the forest to collect mushrooms, because you want to win with most flavor points for fried mushrooms when the last card was taken from the forest. A display of cards is prepared or renewed according to the rules template and you have one action out of five options: 1) Take a card from the forest and – if taken from the Deep Forest - pay with sticks: Mushrooms you pick up; a basket is placed into your display, it does not count towards the limit of cards, but raises this limit by 2 instantly. Sticks are collected separately. A Moon is discarded and you draw a card from the Night pile. A “Fly Agaric” goes to your display and reduces your hand to 4; in your next turn you are still limited to 4 cards, but discard the Fly Agaric. 2) Take all cards from the Decay Pile following the above rules. 3) Fry three or more identical mushrooms. 4) Sell two or more identical mushrooms for sticks - for actions 3) and 4) Night cards count double - or 5) set out a pan. If you cannot do any of those actions you must pass until you can act again. If you want to fry mushrooms you must have a free pan laid out or must play one together with the mushrooms. Depending on the number of mushrooms you fry, you can score more flavor points by adding butter and/or cidre, but you must play those cards together with the mushrooms, you can never add butter or cidre to a pan later.

Fungi is a set collecting game with a kick and also a treat and a pleasure; the design is exceedingly pretty, the limit of cards in hands needs tactic under pressure, and a bit of luck in cards appearing in the display is necessary as well – what more can you ask?
