12 Realms

A final adventure


The heroes of the 12 Realms meet for one final adventure to defeat the Dark Lords of the realms for once and for good - Siegfried, Snow White, d'Artagnan, Jeanne d'Arc, Little Red Ridinghood, Sugar Plum Fairy, Robin Hood or Der Nussknacker, all with basic equipment and abilities, which vary considerably for the individual heroes. Players as heroes decide on the number and kind of realms they want to use - all realms feature different creatures, events and treasures - and then choose a Dark Lord for each of those realms. The rounds of the game comprise the phases Invasion, Action and Refresh.

In the Invasion phase you first update the Invasion Track by advancing the marker; when the marker reaches 20 on any of the realms the game is lost; otherwise you resolve abilities of invaders and place new invaders according to a roll of the area die.

In the action phase you have any number of actions with your hero in any order and combination - Movement, Attack Invaders, Find Treasure or Artifact, Swap Artifacts, Visit Town or Travel. Invaders are fought with talents, to defeat a Dark Lord you need three artifacts specific to the realm. All action of the Action phase are resolved by using hero talents and comparison with Invader talents. In the Refresh phase you regenerate used hero talents.

Tabletop Light seems the best description for this game; it is a well-made nice mix of mechanisms with a family-friendly topic and a well-working cooperative element; you can fight alone for your realm or travel between realms and fight opponents together. 12 Realms is a really nice family trip into the realms of fantasy and fairy tales.
