Rolling Japan

Conquer provinces with dice results

Each player holds a map of Japan, showing six regions. Six of seven dice in seven colors represent those provinces, the purple die is a joker die. The active player draws two dice from the bag, rolls them and names color and result. All enter the results into their maps. The numbers from non-purple dice are entered into any free region of the province in the corresponding color, you choose within the frame of the rules for placement; the result of the purple die can be placed in any region, again within the placement rules. The order of entering results is your choice. The placement rules are: You can only place a number when the number in an adjacent region is equal or maximum 1 higher or lower than the new number. If you cannot place the number, you mark any empty region of your choice with an X. This X is not a number as regards to the adjacency rule. So, a 2 can be entered adjacent to 1, 2, 3, X or an empty region. Three times in the game you can ignore the color of a die and enter its result into any region suiting the rules. When 6 dice have been rolled, the round ends and all dice go back into the bag. After eight rounds you mark all empty provinces with an X and win with fewest X markers on your map.

Rolling Japan is a multi-player solitaire game, as all players must use a result rolled by one player. It is a nice and interesting puzzle with a nearly and neatly balanced mix of luck of the dice and clever placement decisions, with an additional challenge coming from the sophisticated design of the map. And after each game you think “this result could be improved” and want to play again.
