Xalapa

OrAcle stones, geckos and disfavor

Shamans‘ dreams prophecy a great draught and shamans must prove their abilities - to do so they search for mythical symbol and cover them - as regards to changing parameters - with oracle stones. A central board shows tasks posed by oracle, players cover symbols on their individual boards. At the start of round= of a day you turn up the top position cards, showing three oracle stones in the basic version; this cards indicates how oracle stones should be positioned on player boards.

Then you place four oracle cards - only apprentice cards in the basic version - which show symbols that must be covered by oracle stones on the players’ boards, as regards to type and number or position, for instance two gecko symbols or one stone in a corner position. When one player has finished and when then the timer has run down you score a disfavor tile for each parameter you could not meet and you add up penalties from those disfavor tiles and the number of all oracle stones used in this round. After seven rounds you win with the lowest disfavor score. In five other levels of difficulties you can play with increasingly difficult parameters. In the Atlacoya variant you use the backside of the board and give a guess at the start of the game about how many of the seven parameters you will be able to meet. You must complete those parameters in sequence - if you announce three parameters you must complete parameters 1, 2 and 3, completing parameters 1, 4 and 7 would be invalid.

Xalapa offers attractive family entertainment with some demands on quick and logical thinking, sometimes including leaving out a parameter on purpose.
