PLAYED FOR YOU

Teneriffa

An island is developed

Tenerife in the 16th century; the island has been discovered by Spanish noblemen and is used for their economic goals of building houses and exporting Malvasian wine. For this they use Merchants and Farmers, but also Thieves, because one must stay ahead of competitors who also send out their thieves to sabotage your plans.

In the first five or six rounds you act in the corresponding number of towns and then build the Town Hall together. When the Town Hall is complete, it is scored at the end of the round and the player with most points wins.

The rounds follow the order of 1) turn up town card, 2) place and activate characters and 3) take characters back in hand. During the Town Hall building part no town cards are turned up. For the phase “place characters” you place three characters at positions in the character track, then the tiles are revealed from left to right and activated: Masons build two houses for two points each, farmers produce and store sugar or wine; the exporter exports sugar or wine, when a transport slot is available and the goods are scored as regards to the storage spot. The Merchant sells to inmates of houses in other colors and the thieves steal from mason, merchant or exporter, a second thief steals from the first one activated.

The allure of the game comes from the order of actions; the earlier you arrange them the surer you can do them and avoid the risk of thieves. The fun in planning and bluffing can be somewhat diminished by the limits for using some of the characters; all in all Teneriffa is a nice family game with some luck and annoyance due to chain reactions of the thieves.
