Blue Max

WWI Air combat

Blue Max is a nick name for the medal Pour le Mérite which was awarded up to the end of WWI. In this war the medal  was awarded frequently to the combat pilots and got the nickname due to its color and it being awarded to Max Immelmann.

This edition of Blue Max is a re-edition of the game that was published first in 1983. As a pilot for Entente or Mittelmächte (Central Powers) you try to achieve as many hits as possible. The seven phases of a round - or eight, if you use the optional rule for fuel - are: 1) Pursuit - Check if any airplane is pursuing another one. 2) Maneuver planning by selection on the maneuver sheet and marking on the play sheet, pursued planes tell direction and height. 3) Movement - Revealing and executing of the maneuver on the board according to the diagram. 4) Option Fuel - Return of fuel markers to stock. 5) Combat (option of Lewis Gun and stock of ammunition) with firing on a feasible target. 6) Resolving of damage and special effects on planes (optional with altitude). 7) Recreation with repairing of jammed weapons and levelling of stalling planes. 8) Accidents - when in Phase 5) a long volley was fired the weapon is checked for jamming and stalling planes lose one level altitude.

A plane has been hit when the fuel tank explores or when the plane goes off the map or if cannot level a stalling plane. When all planes of one side have been hit you win, as a member of the other faction, with most hits.

This is something for specialists and tacticians, albeit with massive changes compared to earlier editions, for instance there are now four different damage decks.
