Carcassonne Goldrausch

Railways, gold and wild west

In Carcassonne Goldrausch we create a landscape in the Wild West. You hold five cowboys and a tent, one of the cowboys is used for a score marker. The game comprises 72 tiles as usual, featuring railway tracks, mountains with gold nuggets, prairie with Native Indian camps and wild horses and also western towns. As usual you place a new tile next to one already laid out. On a mountain you then place mining chips equal to the number of nuggets depicted on the mountain. Then you can place a cowboy on the new tile, as a railway-man on track, a gold digger on the mountain, a trader in town or farmer in the prairie.

As an alternative you can place or relocate your tent. For this the mountain must be incomplete and the chosen mountain area - which may be on a tile previously placed - must be empty; other tiles in the mountain may carry cowboys and/or tents. If you did not place cowboy or tent you take the top mining tile from the mountain with your tent. A single engine on a track doubles the score for completed tracks. A complete mountain gives you - if you have most gold diggers there - all mining tiles and a point for nugget. A town completely connected to the railway scores 3 points for a trader and 3 points for a track loop. At the end of the game you score incomplete mountains, tracks and towns, Indian camps and herds of wild horses score points for farmers.

Carcassonne Goldrausch is yet another marvelous version of Carcassonne with neat new details but is even more chance-driven, and you must carefully consider how and when to use your cowboys. It is really astonishing what can be gotten out of the main mechanism.
