Krokolores

Waiting for Prey in the Swamp

Crocodiles are lurking motionless in the water and waiting for prey - the snap at everything that swims past their jaws, but not everything that they snatch is tasty.

The game board with the vortex is set up, you assemble your crocodile and place it onto the board with the head pointing at the vortex. 36 cards show potential prey, three of those cards are laid out. You spin the vortex and try to snap when suitable tasty morsels pass by or approach, suitable ones are those that are depicted on the cards on display. If you want to snap, you tilt your crocodile forward. When the head touches the vortex, the vortex stops instantly. All other players now also tilt their crocodile. Each player may now take the card from the display that depict tasty morsels touched by his crocodile’s head. Unfortunately, you must also take alarm clock cards in the same color. Cards that cannot be claimed by any player remain for the next round. Now you refill the display to three cards, tilt back your crocodiles and the next player spins the vortex. When all cards are handed out you must discard a tasty morsel card for each alarm clock card you hold and then win with most tasty morsels depicted on your cards. For younger players you take the alarm clock cards out of play and count the cards you did win, not the tasty morsels on the cards.

Krokolores is yet another beautiful and coherent game by Haba, in which components, topic and mechanisms fit very well together. The deciding fact in the simple mechanism is good assessment of the spin speed and a good reaction speed, the slower the vortex spins the easier it is to snatch.
