Set junior

Quick observation and reaction

Set is a difficult sophisticated collecting game based on shapes and colors, in a valid set of three cards one of three characteristics - color, shape or numbers - must be identical or completely different. A valid set would be one oval shape in green, orange and purple; or one, two and three purple waves or an orange wave, two green rhomboids and three purple ovals.

Set junior is the introductory game for this abstract classic and uses a game board. On one side of the board players familiarize themselves with the principles of set and on the other side you search for sets. In the introductory game you place sets for points: you always hold three tiles and place one of them onto its marked space on the board. If you can complete a set or sets, you take one chip for each completed set. When all tiles are placed you win with most chips.

In the standard game 10 tiles are randomly placed on the orange spaces of the board, the remaining tiles are stacked face-down. All play simultaneously - if you discover a set, you call “Set” and stop the game for the moment. You point out the tiles in the set - if you are correct, you remove the tiles from the board and replace them with tiles from the stack, and you receive a chip; if you choose a wrong set, you discard a chip. When all sets have been found you win with most chips.

In this game Junior really denotes an optimum implementation of the term, the mechanics of the game have been elegantly simplified, but the allure and the challenge posed by the demand for either identical or completely different characteristics in a set remain the same.
