PLAYED FOR YOU

Quiddler

Three words from eight cards

Quiddler is a game on words and letters, comprising 118 letter cards featuring letters A-Z and letter combinations of CH, ER and QU, all in different frequencies. In Round One you are dealt three cards, in Round Two four cards, in Found Three five cards and so on, the rest is face-down draw pile.

In turn each player draws a card and discards a card, in order to form words from the letter cards you have in hand, because you can only lay out all your cards at the same time to be allowed to lay down words at all, but take care! You must leave one letter to discard for a valid turn end! All words that you can find in a regular German dictionary are valid, and a valid word must be made up from a minimum of two letters. If you manage to combine all your cards but one into words to lay them down and to discard one card, you trigger the end of the round: all other players now have one final turn to lay down words; in this final turn you can keep leftover cards in hand. Before the round is scored players have the opportunity to doubt the validity of words that have been displayed. Whoever is incorrect in this doubting must note the letter value of the word for penalty points. Then you score the values of letters displayed for points, letters in hand score their value as penalty points. For the longest word or the majority of words laid out you score a bonus. After eight rounds you win with most points.

Quiddler is an attractive and felicitous mix of standard mechanisms, the better your vocabulary the better your chances to win. That you can display a word more than once in a round can sometimes be of help in the last round.
