Limes

Cultivating border regions

Limes - Border of the Roman Empire - Settlers plant, fish and cut wood and set up watch towers along the border. Each player forms his personal display over the course of the game; both players hold an identical set of cards, each card featuring four individual landscapes. During the game you place workers on those cards who take on different jobs, depending on the type of landscape, and score points for you.

On player is the Initiating player; he turns up the top card of his stack, the other player searches for this card in his stack and then each player puts the card into his own display, in a 4x4 grid. Cards are placed border to border, not staggered, but there need not be correlation in the landscape types.

Then you can place a one of your seven workers on this newly placed card or move a worker already on the grid to an adjacent area. When 16 cards have been placed you score connected landscape areas holding a worker: Farmer - 1 point for each zone in his territory; Fisherman - 1 point for each fisherman's hut adjacent to the shores of his water territory: Woodcutter - 1 point for each territory that is orthogonally adjacent to his woodland territory; Watchman - 1 point for each woodland zone that the Watchman sees in orthogonal direction, but only to the next tower.

Limes offers a game of optimum score achievement, but is a two-player solitaire game. If you are willing to change tactics in mid-game and maybe change the jobs for your workers, you will achieve a good score. Variants for diagonal card placement or movement of workers offer additional challenges and variety, especially as you always use only 16 of 24 cards.
